Cavetown’s Sleepyhead Review

(Published: 2020/04/03)

Cavetown has released his new album! And I am DYING of happiness. It is so good. And now I am at the second last track and wishing I hadn’t heard it already. I actually have quite a bit of homework I should be doing right now but this amazing album is preventing me from concentrating in any capacity.

And it’s ooooverrr noooooooooo! Well I’m playing it all over again. Two of my friends and I are listening to this album at the same time and we’re all in love with it, spamming each other on messages, and putting off our homework (and we’re very dedicated people who actually do our schoolwork). This is the effect you have on us, Cavetown. In fact, when my friend got an ad on Spotify (and she is quite a calm person usually), this was her reaction:

She proceeded to get another ad further in the album. Poor person. I just got Spotify premium and I am soooo happy.

So, currently, my favourite songs on the album are Pyjama Pants, Trying, Wishing Well, and Telescope in that order.

It is now…. around 5 days later and I have listened to the album more times than I should admit and I can properly say that it is a great album. Let me rank it (excluding ‘For You’, the interlude-y song):

  1. ‘Pyjama Pants’ – This was so difficult but ultimately, the lyrics of ‘Pyjama Pants’ overtook that amazing unexpected guitar in ‘Trying’ (which my friends and I practically had a fit over when we heard it). This is the cutest song and I love it.

  2. ‘Trying’ – I love that guitar. The drums seemed a little awkward at one point but I’ve grown used to it now.

  3. ‘Wishing Well’ – I don’t even know why I like this so much. I think it’s the chorus part. Maybe it’s just a generally good song!

  4. ‘Telescope’ – This was my favourite single released before the album. It’s such a satisfying song.

  5. ‘Feb 14’

  6. ‘Sweet Tooth’ – this very nearly topped Feb 14 but the lyrics of ‘Feb 14’ won me over.

  7. ‘Empty Bed’ (The line ‘I’ve been where you are going’ almost put this above ‘Sweet Tooth’ but the guitar won out)

  8. ‘Things That Make It Warm’

  9. ‘Snail’

  10. ‘I Miss My Mum’

So that’s my ranking for now. It might change in a month or two. I think ‘Pyjama Pants’ will forever remain at the top of the list though. I like the direction Robbie is taking with the production and adding guitar and drums…I think it’s cool. As long as his lyrics continue to be as wonderful as they are, I think he is making a good decision about where he is going with his music.

So, on the topic of warm and fuzzy type things, I’ve been doing some baking and dessert making lately…

Chocolate mousse!

Recently, a friend of mine who bakes avidly inspired me to do a little baking myself. I have never really baked in my life up until now. My mum and my grandma cook and bake a lot so I have had a good example set for me, but there is a big difference between watching someone bake and then trying to do it yourself. I started small with some packet brownie mixes from the shop (they were rather good brownies though) and then yesterday I had the insane idea to try to make chocolate mousse while my mum was out. I actually managed to microwave the chocolate successfully (unbeknownst to the fact it could seize up and I would have wasted all the chocolate) but thank goodness my mum arrived home before I got to the part where there was a higher technical difficulty. The mousse turned out wonderfully as you can see. I used this Donna Hay recipe. It wasn’t all that sweet, but I used quite bitter dark chocolate. Anyway, I don’t mind a less sweet mousse. It was quite delicious for me. It just occurred to me it would have been a little cute to put a marshmallow next to the cup when I took that photo. I don’t think I have any marshmallows though. I would love a marshmallow right now… but you don’t need to hear my candy cravings..

Also, I made a BTS-inspired wallpaper for my friend who loves BTS (incidentally the same one who likes baking) and I’ll be putting it up as a freebie sometime soon with a couple of other wallpapers I’ve made in the past – so look out for that. Today is my last day of work-free holidays before I get started on my holiday homework so hopefully I have time to post a little more next week. I did intend on posting more during this holidays because I have been slacking off from my blogging a bit… but that motivation went out the window when I started binging That 70s Show. Oops.

Anyway, try to enjoy isolation, everyone! I have certainly taken this grim time as an opportunity to increase my weekly music listening to an even unhealthier amount of time.

Keep healthy!
