Netflix, Reviewed

What an ambiguous title. It's not a very good title, I admit, but at least its better than the long-winding title of "Assorted Movie and TV Show Reviews, Pt (insert here haha)". Anyway, I've been pretty busy because it is nearing the end of my school term but I have still managed to fit in a few tv and movie reviews for you all (I say that like I have millions of followers on this blog haha). First up:

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

I am so tragically late to this trend. See, after Riverdale, I did not have high hopes for this show and I only watched it as a very last resort ...only to be sucked into it (it is set in the same universe as Riverdale). I have watched all three seasons in the past two and a half weeks (much to the detriment of my mum and my best friend who had to listen to me ramble about it obsessively) and I am eagerly awaiting the fourth season. The best bit about it is that it doesn't fall victim to too many high school clichés and it's just horror enough to be exciting but not too horror to send someone like me running. Also, Sabrina, Ambrose and Aunt Hilda are such likeable characters. I think the emotion "aww, Hilda" is just a constant feeling throughout the show haha. I feel as though season one and two are better than season three but season three was still very enjoyable.

I hear people's arguments about this show being cancelled instead of Riverdale despite Riverdale's declining ratings, but I think that this show (watch as I continually refer to it as 'this show' to avoid typing out a five-word title) has the potential to plunge into the abyss of bad teenage tv if it goes on for too long. As much as I love it, I think that the CW has made a good call on this one. Although, please cancel Riverdale too so people will finally stop talking about it.

8.5/10

Mean Girls

I can't believe I hadn't seen this yet. It was very funny and a perfect movie for a Saturday night Netflix party. There's nothing much else I can say about it though because, well, it's Mean Girls haha.

I'm not even going to rate this!

Pitch Perfect

It is a little easier to believe I hadn't seen this movie for the first 15 years of my life. I really, really dislike musical theatre and musical movies so watching Pitch Perfect was definitely not something that appealed to me - especially since it seriously reminded me of the constantly referenced and replayed train wreck that is High School Musical. It was way better than High School Musical though and actually relatively enjoyable. I mean, some of the musical numbers still irritated me, but at least I know the origin of the Cup Song now!

6.5/10

Favourite quote of mine from the movie: 'I think I've been asleep most of my life."

Elizabethtown

I looove this movie. It is so funny, sweet and quirky and Kirsten Dunst is always a wonderful actress. This was the second time I watched Elizabethtown but I just had to mention it, especially since it just appeared on Netflix! If you like Lost In Translation, I feel like the main character's relationship has the same wonderful impromptu feeling about it that Charlotte and Bob's does. Check it out, it's not depressing like the description makes it seem.

10/10

Trinkets

Sigh. There is nothing special about this show. I watched the first season of it but there is absolutely nothing compelling me to watch the newly released second season. I just don't understand the attraction to teen shows that are pure drama on top of drama. There's no joy! Sure, I watched the whole first season, but only because there was nothing else I could find to watch. It's not quality entertainment but maybe that's the point. Still, I can name at least five teen shows on Netflix that are more entertaining (Stranger Things, That 70s Show, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, I Am Not Okay With This, Daybreak).

5/10

Daybreak

Speaking of Daybreak, I watched Daybreak a couple of weeks ago and quite enjoyed it at the beginning. By the end, I wasn't as excited by it and the ending felt a bit off, but I do recommend it if you don't have much else to watch (if you're a teenager). It is very crude and often gross but it is pretty entertaining.

I Am Not Okay With This

NETFLIX! Give us another season!!! Obviously, I really enjoyed this show. I think there are better shows, but it's not bad by any means. In fact, I think it's rather good. It felt like a grown-up Stranger Things set in the 90s and I am not complaining about that. I loved the relationship between Syd and Stan and while I feel like the show fell flat a couple of times, their energy always brought it back to life. Also, killer soundtrack. I love it and thought it was super cool how they created a band to be mentioned in the show ('Fly' was such a perfect moment!). But if we never get another season, we never find out more about the mysterious man, and Dina and Syd never ever have a conclusion. I am not okay with this being cancelled (haha, see what I did there? So good, I know)! (Especially since there was hardly any of it to begin with. Eight twenty minute episodes?! NETFLIX!!!)

8/10.

Hamlet (2009)

Ok, well this isn't on Netflix but I'm mentioning it anyway. I've been wanting to watch this for a while now because I watched the performance of Much Ado About Nothing with David Tennant and Catherine Tate (because I'm a Doctor Who nerd, of course). Having really enjoyed their performances, I googled the other productions that they are in and was very excited about seeing David Tennant's take on Hamlet. Of course, I wasn't disappointed and liked his 'To be or not to be" soliloquy in particular. The production itself was a bit weird and I'm not sure how well the partially modern set worked but I did think Patrick Stewart played a very good part as King Hamlet. I'd also like to watch the version of Hamlet with Andrew Scott as Hamlet because I watched a video of his soliloquy and it so perfectly portrayed the thoughts of Hamlet (in my opinion).

7/10

Well, that's all.

Clearly I've watched more TV shows and movies than I thought. Oops. Well, I hope you find some suggestions for your Friday night binging. If you haven't read my other recent reviews you can check out part 1 here and part 2 here.

Until next time,

- Charlie B.
