See You Yesterday Review

I am blown away. I started watching this movie expecting a teenage flick. What I came away with was so much more.
Netflix’s new release, See You Yesterday looked like an innocent teen time-travel flick. It started out with the general high school smart kids vibe, until, as Netflix puts it, ‘tragedy strikes’. But the tragedy wasn’t that cliche of a guy going out with the wrong girl, or a disaster prom night. It was that the big brother of the main character, CJ, was shot by a white police officer when seen reaching for a “gun” in his pocket. From there, See You Yesterday spirals off into a beautiful, deep, and thought-provoking movie which I am so glad I decided to watch. It made me cry several times and might just be the best teen movie I have ever seen. It makes me angry that we have to make movies like See You Yesterday to raise awareness about racial gun violence. There is far too much truth in this movie and I hope that one day, society will change for the better.
I thoroughly recommend this movie. It has great actors and an even better message (Plus, I’m a nerd, so I really enjoyed the all-round nerdiness). And hey, it’s on Netflix, which according to nerdy statistics, 50% of Americans stream with, so why not trade in the rom-com for a night?
