Wonder Woman

(Published: 2018/07/13)

I guess I’m a little late with this review given Wonder Woman is already a year old and all, but for those of you who haven’t seen it, you should! Wonder Woman is an amazing movie with so much heart. While a little predictable at times, it really makes up for it with rich characters and emotion.

The story is based around World War I and the fighting between England and Germany as well as a little to do with Greek gods. Diana (Wonder Woman) meets a guy called Steve (who is a spy for England during World War I) after he crashes on Themyscira, the island where Diana resides with the other Amazons. Diana dreams of killing the god of War, Ares, because he is said to return and start another war. When Steve reveals that there is a World War, Diana is certain Ares is the reason behind it and wants to go with Steve back to London to stop him.

I am usually disappointed by Marvel movies due to a lack of plotline and I find that there are usually lots of battles but not very much happening. This is not the case with Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is not the type of movie you can start watching and then turn off. It makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside at times, and the actors are perfect for their roles. They are incredibly believable and you feel like you are with them every step of the way. There is definitely a lot of female empowerment throughout the movie as females weren’t really thought of as fighters or strategic thinkers during that day and age. Diana really turned this belief on it’s head for the characters who witnessed her extreme abilities and did so in a non-cheesy way. A lot of kids/teen movies struggle to avoid cheese factor and it is one of those things that really makes me want to turn off a movie. I am so glad Wonder Woman avoided all things cringe-worthy. And while Diana does participate in a lot of hand to hand fights and avoid many gunshots, Wonder Woman doesn’t feel that violent, probably due to the whole superpower factor. There is also quite a bit of humour amongst all the darkness. Diana doesn’t know anything about the “modern” world and it’s very funny watching her adjust to it.

Plus, one of the best things is, if you enjoy Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman 1984 is coming out in 2019 (AHem, December 2020) and…

SPOILER ALERT

Steve is still alive (or comes back to life, apparently)! Eeee (excitement)!

SPOILER OVER

So, like I said, if you haven’t seen Wonder Woman, you definitely should. Even if you’re not that into Marvel movies (which I’m not), then you will enjoy this movie. And adults, you’ll enjoy it too.

Don’t forget the popcorn!
